Red Bull GRC – Daytona is Best Track Yet

As we mentioned on the podcast earlier this week, Red Bull GRC’s stop in Daytona has the biggest and most dynamic track to date.  The 0.924 mile circuit features the joker in turn one to split the field and preventing the infamous pile ups that caused red flags in past events.  Additionally this course has long enough straights that the cars are reaching 120MPH!   Qualifying, Heat 1, and Heat 2 are already complete.  What I could best discern from their tweeted commentary, this course is allowing for very close…

SCCA – Photos from the 2014 Midwest Division Solo Championship

This was my first time at the famous 50+ acre sea of concrete at Lincoln Air Park in Lincoln, NE. All I can say is WOW! Massive grip and massive courses! The Nebraska Region who hosted this third and final round of the MiDiv Solo Championship season reconstructed the 2013 SCCA Solo Nationals courses for us to run on Saturday and Sunday. After running at MCC for so long, where course design is extremely limited, I didn’t realize how bad some of my bad habits were. Saturday was a disastrous…

CONFIRMED! – David Sterckx & Karen Jankowski are moving up to Open Class for the Ojibwe Forests Rallly! If you listened to this week’s podcast we recorded on Tuesday evening, I assumed wrongly that Sterckx’s entry showing as open class must have been in error.  In reality while David & Karen missed the STPR & NEFR rounds of the Rally America National Championship, they were upgrading the car from Super Production to the Open Class specification.  Unfortunately no details have yet emerged of the upgrades to Sterckx Always Evolving 2011 WRX STi, but David…

IndyLights – 8 Star Motorsports Set for 2015 Debut, Will More Teams Follow?

The new 2015 IndyLights chassis, the Dallara-AER IL-15, debuted at Indianapolis earlier this year on Media Day, the Thursday before the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. The car looks dead sexy, and the first running tests of the car at Putnam Park and at Mid-Ohio were very successful. The car appears to perform brilliantly and should be a great platform for the last step for young drivers on their way to the Verizon IndyCar Series. There’s only one problem. Cost. Sadly, it always comes down to money, doesn’t it? With every…

SCCA — Copeland Sweeps MX-5 Cup Double Header at Road America

Rounds Nine and 10 of the Mazda MX-5 Cup Series came to a close this weekend at the renowned road course of Road America, located in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Driver Dean Copeland had a great performance on his favorite track, finishing first in both races. During Round 10, Copeland made a great save after going over the curb in Canada Corner and injuring the car, resulting in the steering wheel being offset by almost 90 degrees, yet still managed to hold on to the lead and take the top step of the podium. In the…

SCCA – Pirelli World Challenge at Mid-Ohio, Best Races of the Weekend

The IndyCar weekend at the Mid-Ohio SportsCar Course is a special one for myself and Mr. Whitesell. It’s a wonderful weekend of gorging ourselves on fried bologna sandwiches, tasty craft beers, and as much racing as you can pack into a 10-hour day. In addition to the Verizon IndyCar Series, the entire Mazda Road to Indy Program which includes Indy Lights, Pro Mazda, and USF2000, were on hand, as well as the best damn racing in North America the Pirelli World Challenge. Even when the weekend was shared with the…
