SCCA – Kansas City Region’s First Rallycross

First of all, let me say, HOLY CRAP WAS THAT A TON OF FUN!!! This past weekend the Kansas City Region of the Sports Car Club of America held its very first rallycross event. It was a new experience for everyone as only five out of the thirty participants had ever rallycrossed before. Most of the competitors were very experienced autocrossers, and there were a few like me who have only scant experience at autocross and none at rallycross. Fortunately, we did have the help of a few knowledgeable and…

USF2000 and Pirelli World Challenge Are Solid with Green-Savoree

While I thoroughly enjoy the IZOD IndyCar Series and American Le Mans Series races at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, I must admit that my favourite parts of the weekend are the USF2000 and World Challenge races. The USF2000 races this year have seen a huge increase in participation level, with grid sizes routinely in the high 20s and sometimes in the 30s. The SCCA World Challenge has also seen a high level of participation in its three classes. The variety of machines, Championship, Formula Continental, and Formula Enterprise cars…

SCCA – Photog Stinks It Up in KCR Solo Event 10

It’s a good thing for me that Mr. Pechin didn’t show up last Sunday for the Kansas City Region of the Sports Car Club of America (KCRSCCA) Solo Event #10 held at the Metropolitan Community College Blue River Campus’s Precision Driving Center. I stunk it up!! Fill with confidence, or more accurately overconfidence, I went out to attack what I thought was going to be a fairly straightforward circuit. Dan Wheeler, the Event Chair and course designer for Event #10, created a very deceptive layout with elements that forced you…

SCCA – Learning to DRIVE: A Look at the Kansas City Region SCCA Fall Solo Racing School

Twice every year, the Kansas City Region of the SCCA holds a Solo School in which thirty student drivers, mostly drivers with little or no experience in racing competitively, are paired with instructors to provide them with one-on-one instruction on the sport of Solo racing, or autocross, vehicle dynamics, racing lines, and the art of walking and learning a course. We followed rookie autocrosser Tim Steger through his second solo school experience. Tim attended the Spring solo school earlier in the year and competed in his Miata occasionally through the…

USF2000 – 2012 Champions, Changes to FE, and a New Presenting Sponsor

The Championship Class The National and Championship class titles were both decided last Saturday during Race #2 at the Virginia International Raceway, the final race of the 2012 Cooper Tires USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda, and it was a good weekend to be a Cape Motorsports driver! Spencer Pigot, thanks to his setting the fastest lap time on his way to a dominant win in Race #1, started from Pole in Race #2 and took that advantage all the way to the checkers, making it a sweep for the…

SCCA – From Racing Photographer to Racing Driver

Ok, maybe I’m reaching with the moniker “racing driver”, but I did compete in my first motorsports event. After photographing a few of the Kansas City Region SCCA Solo Events, and seeing how much fun everyone was having, I decided to finally give it a go myself. I was fortunate enough to get in at the last minute to the Solo School the club held the Saturday before the event and received some much needed instruction, correction, and experience driving an autocross course. Thirty students signed up and were divided…

ALMS and USF2000 Photos from the Virginia International Raceway

Tom Turk knocked it out of the park again! Tom was at the Virginia International Raceway (VIR) for the season finale of the USF2000 National Championship Presented by Cooper Tires Powered by Mazda, and the penultimate round of the American Le Mans Series. Joining the USF2000 and ALMS were the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama and the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy MX-5 Cup. Here are Tom’s photo galleries from the weekend. Remember, if you’re anywhere near the Baltimore/DC area and need photography services for your wedding, portraits, or event,…

ALMS and SCCA Photos from MidOhio

In addition to the IZOD IndyCar Series and the USF2000 National Championship, the American Le Mans Series and the SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge were at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course last weekend. As always, the Cadillac CTS-Vs in the PWC sounded absolutely amazing! Robertson Racing’s FordGT were missed this week, but the new SRT Viper made it’s debut. I must admit that although it looked cool, it’s sound and performance were underwhelming compared to the Corvettes. MidOhio was their first event, however, and given that, I can cut…

SCCA – Fun In The Sun at Heartland Park Topeka

The third round of the Kansas City Region SCCA Solo Championship took place this past Saturday at Heartland Park Topeka on the infield tarmac on the south end of the course. With all that wide-open tarmac, the course was much faster and open, with broader corners than most autocross courses tend to be. There was a nice mix of lengthy straights, high-speed sweepers, double-apex corners, tight hairpins, and of course a couple of slalom sections. Being held jointly by the Kansas Region and the Kansas City Region, the turnout was…
