Just like that it is all over. The cleaning crews are clearing the soda and beer cans, Dario has won, and we all wait until next year to see what surprises the race holds. This year was one of the most controversial five hundred mile races in a long time because of the setup of the month. The month of May has always been a month and not just a two week event. So how did it fair? Lets take a look and grade the 94th Indianapolis 500. Practice: B+…

IndyCar – Pippa Mann Brings the A-Game!
Sam Schmidt Motorsports pilot, Pippa Mann, made history at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Thursday by becoming the first female pole winner in Firestone Indy Lights history, and in the history of the Speedway. Her pole winning time was 1:35.7505 over the two laps for an average of 187.989 mph, just ahead of teammate Wade Cunningham’s 187.742 mph. This is a fantastic turn around for Pippa who’s had a frustrating mid-pack season thus far starting last at St. Pete and running only six laps at St. Pete, starting and finishing…

The United States Grand Prix is set for yet another return as the traveling circus trades in their glitz in glamour for cowboy hats. The event was announced to day by Formula 1 and will be held in Austin Texas from 2012 to 2021. The race is slated to be held on a new fixed circuit that will be purpose built for the event. This is the first time since 1980 that the race will be held on a purpose built, fixed road course and the first time ever a…

As part of our continuing series of short talks recalling favorite memories of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I had a great conversation with Dr. Dana Grove from Johnson County Community College (Go Cavs!) over lunch earlier in the week. Dana is quite literally a life-long fan of the Memorial Day Classic, who’s first birthday, and his upcoming birthday, falls on Race Day. What better way is there to celebrate your birthday than by singing Back Home Again in Indiana with 300,000 of your best…

I will admit that I was a bit skeptical when the IZOD IndyCar series decided that they were going to switch up the qualifying events for the Indianapolis 500. However, I will admit that I was pleasantly surprised with today’s proceedings. Helio Castroneves as well probably has no gripes as he has taken his fourth pole position for the greatest spectacle in racing. The day would start before the qualifying even began as Takumo Sato would crash his Lotus sponsored KV Racing technology car. Sato would be taken to Methodist…

The second installment in our series of fan conversations recalling our favorite memories of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is with a very special guest, my father Derek Patterson, who in 1988 happened to be in just the right place at just the right time to have an experience of a lifetime. Here is your Pole Day qualifying order from IndyCar.com. Keep in mind that T cars that have not set a time will be withdrawn from the order in favor of primary cars later in the order. That said, AJ Foyt IV will be first on track tomorrow when the gun goes off at 11 am. Paul Tracy, Alex Tagliani and Marco Andretti look to have prime early pill draws to take advantage of a cool morning track before the temps start to rise. Look for those guys to put in…

Here are your final aggregate practice times for the month. And with that, we can make our predictions on who will not make the show. Tomorrow will see a whole host of non-to-3 teams trying to break into the fast 9. Alex Tagliani, Paul Tracy, Dan Wheldon, Hideki Mutoh, Mario Moraes, Graham Rahal and even Davey Hamilton have all put up consistently good times this past week and may play a part in the fast 9 session, especially if they benefit from an early pill draw. Good luck gentlemen. The…

Here are your practice times for fast Friday. Amazingly, the track stayed mostly dry today except for the occasional yellow for moisture in turn X. And while the track was green, a whole slew of faces made their way to the top of the timesheets for today. Helio, Tagliani and Power all put in 226+ times, while Townsend Bell and Graham Rahall mixed up the status quo by placing 10th and 11th respectively. Dan Wheldon and Mike Conway chose to sit out today’s session though, most likely because today’s conditions…
