Kimi Raikkonen has been all the rage over the last couple of weeks. Is he staying in the WRC or heading back to Formula 1 to race for Renault? The 2007 Formula 1 World Champion has had a rough debut in his rookie WRC season, but many teams see Kimi as a potential regular points scorer and the Monster World Rally team has step forward.
Along with the Citroen Junior squad, reports have Kimi getting offers from MINI and potentially Renault F1. However it is the apparent offer from Monster World Rally Team that has me the most confused. The team has talked of running a second car along side American Ken Block and up to now Chris Atkinson had been a favorite for that seat. However the MWRT folks think that Kimi would be a good fit for the team and I kind of have to agree. Given Monster’s antics to this point in the off track events, Kimi’s wild party side would be a perfect fit. This would also add Kimi to the Ford stable for the 2011 season. That is really a double edge sword to be honest. I think his exposure will be good for the Ford house if he chooses to be on the team, but I don’t think it really does much to further the results for the brand which is what it really needs right now.
Chalk this one up to believe it when I see it, but I could certainly see why the Monster brand would want this. In the end I think it all revolves around pay for Kimi. Who ever wants him the most will have to pay a pretty penny. Keep track of this spot as we continue to soft through silly season fun!
