Le Mans – Sharp Leaves Highcroft

Scott SharpIt was announced just a couple weeks ago that Scott Sharp would be forming his own GT2 Ferrari team to compete in the American Le Mans series; however at the time he stated he would still drive the Patron Highcroft Acura in LMP1. Funny how quickly things change.

Scott announced today that he will not defend his LMP1 crown and will instead race for his private entry team known as Extreme Speed Racing. The tea is further going to expand into a two car effort with Sharp and Patron CEO Ed Brown confirmed as two of the drivers. Brown recently concluded work in the challenge class and will contest his first ALMS full season next year. David Brabham will stay and lead the effort for Highcroft with a replacement for Sharp to be announced soon.

This raises a couple questions in my mind that may be not so good for the ALMS as a whole. Is Acura pulling its factory backing from the sport? Why would Sharp drive a private LMP1 when he could drive his own private car? There has still been no announcement from Acura on their future in the series and the longer they wait, the more concerning it has to become for folks like Highcroft and de Ferran Motorsports who currently have that backing. The ALMS series looks to be dealt yet another blow in the coming weeks but stranger things have happened.

  1. Yeah, I fear that this is just a harbinger of the announcement that Acura will not have a factory effort next year. I think we will hear them announce shortly that the LMP1 & 2 cars are available as customer buys for privateer teams.
