Many of you probably watched the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona this past weekend, or as much of it as SpeedTV was able to broadcast. What you may not know is how well the Star Mazda alums did in the endurance race. As we mentioned earlier in the week, there were twenty four alumni of the Star Mazda Championship competing in both DP and the GT classes at the epic 24 hour race. As it turns out, two of the four drivers in the race-winning #01 Telmex Chip Ganassi With Felix Sebates car were graduates of the Star Mazda Championship. Joey Hand was the 1999 series champion, and Graham Rahal was competitor and race winner in the 2005 Star Mazda Championship.
Other Star Mazda standouts were Terry Borcheller who came in 3rd overall in the #9 Action Express Racing entry, and Ricky Taylor in the #10 SunTrust Racing car which finished in 5th place overall. In the GT class, Bryan Sellers helped propel the #48 Paul Miller Racing to a podium finish taking second in class. Perhaps most impressive (especially when you look at what was left of their car!) was the Star Mazda trio of Jonathan Bomarito, Adam Christodoulou, and John Edwards, all three Star Mazda champions, who nursed the #70 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 to an impressive 6th in class. I say impressive because of the huge setbacks, tyre failures, and comprehensive damage what the car sustained. 2007 champion, Dane Cameron, and alum James Gue help take the #40 Dempsey Racing / Seattle Children’s Hospital Mazda RX-8 GT to a podium finish in 3rd. Pretty cool showings by the Star Mazda alums, if you ask me.
