F1 – The Schum to Mercedes GP?

Talk about the mother of all silly season rumors! Could Michael Schumacher really jump ship and run for the new Mercedes GP? Although I think it would be one of the greatest things ever, I won’t believe a word of it until I see the signed contract.

Spanish newspaper Diario AS claims that the new deal Schumacher inked with Ferrari back in September – due to run until the end of 2012 – will focus primarily on the Scuderia’s road car development, with the German relinquishing his advisory role on the F1 side.

That, allied to Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Vice-President Haug’s enigmatic declaration that there could be some ‘surprises’ in the driver line-up of the newly-rebranded Mercedes Grand Prix outfit in 2010 – what was in 2009 Brawn GP [see separate story – click here] – has prompted some to wonder whether Schumacher could be the mystery driver to join ex-Williams F1 ace Nico Rosberg in an all-German, Silver Arrows ‘super team’ next year.

Securing a legend like Schumacher, even if he is in the twilight of his career, would give immediate credibility and championship threat potential to the newly rebadged Mercedes GP team. Brawn had an excellent year, and they finished the season strong, but with finances waning 2010 wasn’t shaping up to go as well. The recent purchase of the Brawn GP outfit by Mercedes provided a huge financial shot in the arm for the team, and securing a multiple WDC would immediately place the team in a position to be a front runner for both the Diver’s and Constructor’s Championships if not the outright favorites.

  1. Ah, but wouldn’t it be fun to watch Shaun go ballistic if it did?

  2. I would be more interested in your reaction Doug. (I think I already know how Shaun would respond)

For you it would either be a massive outpouring of Fanboy-ism or you would burn everything mercedes…. not quite sure where you would come down.

  3. I would love to see Michael at Mercedes. It would kind of be like a Brett Favre saga for me, I would root against him because he is not on my team, but I would love to see him do well.

I think that Mercedes would have to be the favorites for the title upon this signing if it comes to be. I think this is a huge stretch, but I have thrown wild theories out before and will not rule this out all the way.
