IndyCar – Kansas Gets 2nd Cup Date, IndyCar Certainly Out

Well, its officially official. The Kansas Speedway has been approved for a second NASCAR Sprint Cup race for 2011. In addition to their early October date, the Kansas Speedway will also feature a race the first week of June. Its not official that Kansas is off the 2011 IndyCar schedule, but this announcement really makes it unlikely that open-wheel racing will return to Kansas City any time soon.

Kansas Speedway and International Speedway Corporation (ISC) announced today that NASCAR has approved ISC’s request for realignment and beginning in 2011, Kansas Speedway will host two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekends.

Personally, I think this is a real tragedy. Yes, I know the races in 2008 and especially in 2009 were …well… not to mince words, snoozers. The race this year offered some good racing action, however, and the on track product looked to be poised for improvements that would return it to the level achieved earlier in the decade when close finishes and tight racing were par for the course. I think we all saw the writing on the wall this year when only 15k people showed up for the event, a number that even the three Road2Indy series bested on Saturday night at Iowa. Although we’ve not heard anything yet from the league, today’s announcement leaves little doubt that Kansas is off the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Schedule.
