Rally – Saab to Join WRC??

9-1 may be the platform of choice for Saab
Now that MINI has joined the small list of WRC manufacturers, there is rumor of another team that is not Toyota possibly joining as well. SAAB has expressed a strong interest in the WRC and may be willing to join with one of their vehicles.

I will admit that this particular announcement has caught me off guard. If we think back to just a couple months ago, SAAB was in serious trouble and about to go out of existence. Now, it seems that everything is in line for a potential bid. It has been since the late 70’s that we have seen the Swedish car on the stages. Autosporthas indicated that the initial meeting with the FiA has occurred and that both sides are very optimistic at this point. Saab would join Ford, Citroen, and MINI as the four manufacturers with a potential to see VW join as well.

If all of this pans out I think that WRC fans are going to be in for a real treat. These programs will probably not launch a full campaign until 2012, but the prospect of seeing more cars on the stages is very promising. North Sport had indicated four manufacturers would be optimal, but we have the chance now to see six or maybe even seven before all is said and done. There is certainly plenty of talent to go around and the potential for some guys we don’t usually see on a regular basis. We will keep tabs on the reports and relay them as they become available but right now 2012 is looking like a great year for the WRC.
