The US F2000 National Championship opened their season on March 27th and 28th along with Star Mazda and the Firestone Indy Lights on the Streets of St. Petersburg as support races to the IZOD IndyCar Series. It was a weekend of great open-wheel racing, torrential rainstorms aside. So good in fact, the officials decided, “What the heck! Let’s play two!” Ok, perhaps it wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision, but the series did run two races that weekend. The class of the field that weekend was new development driver for Andretti Autosport, Sage Karam. He won both races from the pole by significant margins. In Race #1, he finished significantly ahead of the Cape Motorsports car piloted by Irishman Patrick McKenna by 13.970 sec. In Race #2, he finished 16.732 sec ahead of second place finisher Josh Fielding of Cape Motorsports. In Race #1, Terrick Mansur of Liberty Motorsports claimed the last step of the podium, and in Race #2, McKenna finished third behind his teammate by about 0.4 sec.

The next event on the US F2000 schedule is an exhibition event held on the same weekend as the American Le Mans Series Monterey presented by Patron where they will have two 30-minute races on the Sunday after the ALMS race. The following weekend, its off to Indianapolis for the Night Before the 500. Below is a summary of the US F2000 season schedule. Of note, is the one remaining shared weekend with Star Mazda and Firestone Indy Lights at the Iowa Speedway. That will be your last chance in 2010 to see the entire Road To Indy development series compete on the same weekend.

  • March 27-28: Streets of St. Petersburg
  • May 23rd: Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
  • May 29th: Night Before the 500 at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis
  • June 19th: Iowa Speedway
  • June 26-27: New Jersey Motorsports Park
  • July 31st – August 1st: Autobahn Country Club
  • August 21-22: Road America
  • September 30 – October 1: Road Atlanta

Drivers to Watch

Sage Karam has already shown that he is a serious force and will likely continue to be so in the US F2000 National Championship. However, another highly talented driver will be joining him at Andretti Autosport beginning with the Night Before the 500 race at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis on Saturday May 29th. Zach Veach joins the team after a long tough winter of trying to find a ride. It seemed that things were well in place for Zach to start in the Atlantics Championship this year until that series failed to answer the bell. Zach was their singular confirmed entry for 2010. Thankfully, Zach has landed well on his feet securing a position with Andretti Autosport, an organization that races in every IRL-sanctioned series. The two Cape Motorsports cars have also shown themselves to be very quick. Patrick McKenna is definitely a driver one should watch through the season. It will be interesting to see how these drivers handle their first oval at ORP.

  1. Alan Turner

Love these little cars. Whether it’s the legendary Swift DB6, the dominate Van Diemens or the beautiful one of Centurian. Great cars. Can’t wait for ORP.

  2. Yep! These junior formulas typically have much better racing than the big cars. I’m really looking forward to FIL on Carb Day and then the USF2000 and Star Mazda on Saturday. Should be a blast. Perhaps you can meet up with us at ORP?
