SCCA — Trans Am is Back, and Bigger Than Ever

On May 9th, 2015, Trans Am had a staggering 74 cars entered in the two races at beautiful Road Atlanta. To say that the grid was packed would be an understatement. This, of course, is great news for racing fans, because a full grid means lots of cars are fighting over the same real estate. If you’re looking for racing that’ll hold you on the edge of your seat, look no further. One of the season’s hottest series has kicked off the summer with a healthy list of entries and fierce competition in…

SCCA — Koch Clinches Double Pole at Road Atlanta

Points leader Kenton Koch will be leading Rounds 11 and 12 of the Mazda MX-5 Cup Series Presented by BFGoodrich Tires, after setting some blistering times in qualifying . Provided he can at least start both races, Koch will mathematically secure this year’s championship. Although, based on his qualifying times, it appears that Koch doesn’t plan on merely starting; he is in it for the podium. For those who have followed the MX-5 Cup throughout the season, Kenton has been consistently fast nearly every race, and shows no intention of slowing down now. He is not…

This weekend, Pirelli World Challenge prepares to wrap up the 2014 season with this weekend’s race in Tooele, UT. SCCA — A Look Back at Road America

Its been almost two weeks since I had the pleasure of working with the Mazda MX-5 Cup Series Presented by BFGoodrich Tires at “America’s Nurburgring”, the beautiful Road America. Now that some time has passed and the excitement has calmed, I think it is worth looking back at the weekend as a whole, as the newly formed TUDOR United SportsCar Championship series paired with the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, in addition to the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge, Prototype Lites and Mazda MX-5 Cup, to form the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase. The weekend had…

SCCA – Photos from the 2014 Midwest Division Solo Championship

This was my first time at the famous 50+ acre sea of concrete at Lincoln Air Park in Lincoln, NE. All I can say is WOW! Massive grip and massive courses! The Nebraska Region who hosted this third and final round of the MiDiv Solo Championship season reconstructed the 2013 SCCA Solo Nationals courses for us to run on Saturday and Sunday. After running at MCC for so long, where course design is extremely limited, I didn’t realize how bad some of my bad habits were. Saturday was a disastrous…

SCCA — Copeland Sweeps MX-5 Cup Double Header at Road America

Rounds Nine and 10 of the Mazda MX-5 Cup Series came to a close this weekend at the renowned road course of Road America, located in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Driver Dean Copeland had a great performance on his favorite track, finishing first in both races. During Round 10, Copeland made a great save after going over the curb in Canada Corner and injuring the car, resulting in the steering wheel being offset by almost 90 degrees, yet still managed to hold on to the lead and take the top step of the podium. In the…

SCCA – Pirelli World Challenge at Mid-Ohio, Best Races of the Weekend

The IndyCar weekend at the Mid-Ohio SportsCar Course is a special one for myself and Mr. Whitesell. It’s a wonderful weekend of gorging ourselves on fried bologna sandwiches, tasty craft beers, and as much racing as you can pack into a 10-hour day. In addition to the Verizon IndyCar Series, the entire Mazda Road to Indy Program which includes Indy Lights, Pro Mazda, and USF2000, were on hand, as well as the best damn racing in North America the Pirelli World Challenge. Even when the weekend was shared with the…

SCCA — Mazda MX-5 Cup Ready for Rounds Nine and Ten at Road America

As practice has ended for the Mazda MX-5 Cup Series at Road America, drivers look to tomorrow’s qualifying for a suitable starting position for the upcoming double-header. As teams and drivers decide how to secure a spot on the podium in Elkhart Lake, WI, the one strategy that everyone has been talking about is drafting. No, this isn’t NASCAR and these Mazda’s are not the futuristic looking machines of F1, but here at Road America, drafting will be the name of the game for the two MX-5 Cup Series races this weekend. The combination…

SCCA – KCRSCCA Solo Event 8 Photos

We’re three quarters of the way through the SCCA Kansas City Region’s Solo season. Event 8 was held last Sunday at the usual venue, the Metropolitan Community College Precision Driving Center in Independence, MO. It was a fast, but technically challenging course which proved too much for this photog turned driver. At the end of the day, I remembered Alain Prost’s famous quote, “When I look fast, I’m not smooth and I am going slowly. And when I look slow, I am smooth and going fast.” If only I’d remembered…
