IndyCar- Just Juan driver added to Penske lineup for 2014

Team Penske announced in a press release today that 1999 CART FedEx Series champion, 2000 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race Winner, 2003 Monaco Grand Prix Winner and 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Rookie of the Year Juan Pablo Montoya is returning to American Open Wheel racing in 2014. Terms have been agreed to between Montoya and Penske for the 37 year old Columbian to drive the #2 entry for the Mooresville, NC based operation.

“I am really excited to join this legendary team beginning next year,” said Montoya. “I have had the opportunity to drive for some of the best racing teams in the world and I have always admired Roger Penske and his organization. I consider it an honor to be offered the opportunity to drive for Team Penske.”

“Juan is a proven winner at all levels of motorsport,” said Roger Penske. “He has won a lot of races and championships and he has an extremely passionate fan base. We look forward to building on his successes together and we believe he will be a great addition to Team Penske.”

Montoya competed in the CART FedEx Championship Series in 1999 and 2000, taking 10 wins, 13 podiums, 14 poles and the 1999 Series Championship for Target Chip Ganassi Racing. In 2000, Montoya competed in the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, leading 167 of the 200 laps to win in dominating fashion.

  1. My hope is that Juan shows better than Rubens did last year. The fear that Juan may be past his prime. Even if he isnt, he will have a hard time distinguishing himself among Penske’s current driver lineup. Even so, a 3rd seat at Penske really hasn’t entered in to much of the silly season talk, so this doesn’t upset the apple cart too much. There are still good seats available (Ganassi #38, Panther #4, etc) for guys like Kanaan and Briscoe to fill. We shall see.

    Well, Roger has done his part getting a marketable driver into a good seat. Now IndyCar needs to do their part and secure a schedule that doesn’t appear like a contraction of the previous season….. (Grrrrr)
