I am a huge fan of all classic cars and a really big fan of classic racers. Whether it is the Ferrari abusing Ford GT40 or old Mercedes Grand Prix cars as mentioned below, I just love seeing where we have been in history compared to where we are and where we will be going! On Thursday 4th July, the team warmed up for its home race in Germany by sending its two drivers out on a lap of the Nordschleife at the Nürburgring in two historic Silver Arrows – Nico in a Type W 196 and Lewis in a Type W 154. Juan Manuel Fangio (1954) and Richard Seaman (1938) respectively drove the same models to victory at the Nürburgring.
The legendary Nordschleife has frequently played a major role in the history of the Silver Arrows, from the debut victory for Manfred von Brauchitsch driving a W 25 in 1934 to the win for Juan Manuel Fangio in 1954 at the wheel of the W 196.
Those might have been the only two Grand Prix-racing cars that were exercised and photographed, but I saw a photograph of David Coultard driving a 300 SLR. My jaw dropped. Awesome steed.
