F1 – Renault Excercise Caution…Rightfully So!

Eric Boullier and the Renault Formula 1 team have worked very hard this season with driver Robert Kubica to turn around what was a joke last season. A team that nearly folded shop has seemingly been returned to prominence this year and it has had to be THE feel good story of the year for F1. Kimi Raikkonen is still on the fence for his 2011 plans and Renault said today that they would not mind meeting Kimi face to face in order to understand what Kimi actually wants. I applaud the team for this step and here is why.

How many times have we seen a name like Raikkonen come out of the word work and a team snap them up instantly? The team thinks that having a guy like that on the team will make them popular and may even bring success. Renault have worked too hard this year to just head out and take Kimi back into a sport he claims he can do with out. Is he a past champion? Yeah he is, but lets not forget his last stint with Ferrari. To put it honestly, he was lazy and rather ridiculous. His lack of interest was a cancer to Ferrari and a reason why he was shown the door a year early for Fernando Alonso. A team cannot succeed with a cancer like that and Renault have made note of this in their approach. So meeting Kimi and trying to see what he truly is looking to get out of this potential return is a sound move that I think deserves an a pat on the back.

Regardless of what Kimi does this next season, I think that Renault are in the right for questioning a past champion who acts as though he can go where ever he wants and get what ever he wants. I hope the French squad hold him accountable and make him work for what he wants.
