Rally – Loeb set to Retire After Next Year

The age of Seb 2.0 may be upon us after next season. Citroen number one and most successful rally driver of all time Sebastian Loeb is set to walk away from rally after next season.

It has not been a secret that Loeb’s time in the WRC was coming to an end soon, and it looks as though 2011 will be it for the French ace. To be honest, what is there left for him to do? He has already smashed every record in the book and done so with authority. The news came after an interview with Paris-Match where he had this to say:

“I feel I have taken enough risks and I am not ready to take any more,” he said. “My motivation now is the pleasure.” -Sebastian Loeb on post 2011

It will then be time for young Sebastian Ogier to take the lead at Citroen and uphold all of the work. A job that the young french driver is more than up to the challenge to do. 2012 will see perhaps Ogier and Latvala begin their rivalry as team number one drivers. Depending on what happens within the Ford camp over the next couple seasons will dictate the battle for sure. Also not to be counted out are some of the other manufacturers like MINI who may be in prime position in 2012 to mount their first charge. While Sebastian Loeb has enjoyed great success in the series, I think it is time for him to go as his dominance is starting to act as a liability for the series. Regardless of that comment, their will not be another driver like Sebastian Loeb for a very very long time.

  1. Sad to see Loeb go, but really what else does he have to prove? …and it will be a good opportunity for the other Citroen drivers to show their abilities.
