TV – Weekend Racing Schedule for Sept 24, 25, and 26.

Formula 1 is back on track! …well, such as the track may be. The Singapore GP is this weekend, and it really is a great spectacle, even if the racing action is junk. Being on the opposite side of the planet as the US is mitigated a bit by the fact that the race will be at night. The practice, qualifying, and race will be broadcast by Speed at sensible times of the morning. Cool! Formula 1 cars under the lights, even if the racing isn’t great, is always a cool sight.

The WRC returns to Discovery’s HD Theatre on Sunday morning with the Rally Japan. It was a very exciting rally, and I for one am looking forward to seeing the broadcast and the action, even if I do know the final outcome. There’s still nothing like seeing those in-car camera shots from rally cars at speed. Seriously, is there any better camera shot in motorsports than a rally car dash cam? The only thing that can come close is perhaps a fender cam on a TT bike. BTW, HD Theatre has been showing the Isle of Man TT on Monday nights. If you haven’t caught it yet, check it out. Brilliant stuff.

No IndyCar race on Versus this week, but the Silk Way Rally *WILL* be on Versus on Sunday afternoon! This is part of the lead up to the Dakar rally in January, …which of course doesn’t go to Dakar, or even to the same continent as Dakar any more. Rally action is always good, though, and I’ll take what I can get. The Silk Way Rally will run through the European portion of the old Soviet Union beginning at St. Petersburg (not Florida) to Sochi on the shores of the Black Sea.

Finally, there will be some North American open-wheel racing airing this weekend. The USF2000 and Star Mazda championships along with the Mazda MX5 Cup races at Mosport will air on HD Net on Saturday afternoon. Although this is tape-delayed, the previous Visit Florida Cup races on HD Net have been expertly produced and I’m really looking forward to seeing the Mosport broadcast.

I think Leigh Diffey makes any race more exciting. I love his style. He is by far the best announcer of this current era. He makes Jon Beekhuis sound like a Saturday Night Live skit and the bungling Bob Jenkins an embarrasment. there was nothing worse than a sweaty Jack Arute at Motegi. ” I dressed inappropiately” Dear Lord…LOL

Versus really needs a new fresh cast of characters. Beekhuis, Buhl, and Bob do not convey the excitement that is happening before them. They often miss the action all together, and when they do catch it, it is like ” Oh, Wowww, he’s on the button.”

Leigh Diffey is the best in the business, second only to Ken Squire.

  3. I would gladly take Versus’ crew over anything else we have seen in the last decade in AOWR. I give Versus massive credit for the quality of their broadcasts, and that includes all of their announcing team.

  4. I like Jon, but I must admit, Arute kinda creeped me out at Motegi. As for Buhl, …meh. They could find better for sure. As Mike said, though, the crew we have, even with their flaws, are a far sight better than what he have with ABC.

Diffey is brilliant! He, Hobbs, and Mattchet make a great set, and Buxton is starting to grow on me. I wasn’t so sure at the beginning of the season, but I’m really starting to warm up to his style of pit reporting.
