F1 – Mercedes Trumps Media

Brawn12The last couple weeks have been interesting for Mercedes GP. The potential return of seven time champion Michael Schumacher, and a possible sponsorship issue. Many in the media thought that the Henkel-gate situation would really hurt the Brawn/Mercedes and their aspirations to defend their title. Ross Brawn has proved to be one step ahead with the announcement that Petronas will join the team for a long time sponsorship.

This is really out of left field in my opinion. The Malaysian oil giant was originally thought to be connected with the mylotus protus Lotus, and then potentially with the Sauber F1 team who was formally BMW and who had previously held the sponsor. Petronas even went as far as to say they may not sponsor a car at all in 2010. This news should put to rest any doubt that Mercedes lacks funding to continue chasing Schumacher and the titles. This also ensures that funding is available for Nico Rosberg as well. The manner in which Ross has been able to gain Petronas, Rosberg, and more than likely Michael Schumacher makes the Mercedes factory squad a very real threat to repeat both titles and become a force that will be here to stay into the future.

  1. This is a real coup. The MS thing isn’t THAT much of a surprise, but the Petronas deal is a total stunner! As much respect as I have for Ferrari’s two pilots, the Red Cars will struggle. Mercedes GP will be the dominant team on the grid this year!! 😀 I am concerned about Sauber, now. What are they going to do for sponsorship?
